Behind every empowered entrepreneur is a support system that helps turn potential into lasting impact. ‘Life of Impact’ volunteering projects recognised as changemakers A volunteering initiative has been recognised for its innovative approach which empowers online students to deliver positive change in their local communities. The ‘Life of Impact Volunteering Initiative’ involved 75 Africa-based online Mastercard Foundation Scholars and was led by Inga Ackermann, Online Learning and Leadership Coordinator for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program marks International Women's Day On March 12, 2025, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program's University of Edinburgh community came together to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) in an online celebration. Teaching technology to technology teachers in refugee settlements in Uganda Emerging from the Digital Education Practitioner Network (DEPN) project at the University of Edinburgh in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, a recent Google Academic Research Award funded project on training teachers who work in refugee settlements in Uganda, aims to address the significant challenges involved working in such contexts. Looking back: Mastercard Foundation WESAF Fellows and Edinburgh academics attend Sustainability School As the MScR component of the WESAF Doctoral Programme draws to a close, we reflect back on one of the highlights of the year. In April and May of 2024, Mastercard Foundation WESAF Fellows and a delegation of 13 academics from the University of Edinburgh participated in a 10-day Sustainability School at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Uniting African innovators at unique Enterprise School A unique Enterprise School for African student-entrepreneurs took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, in July 2024. The opportunity formed through the partnership between the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Edinburgh, united 72 postgraduate students from 13 countries to develop innovative skills and deliver business pitches to expert mentors and judges. Shaping the future: Uganda’s Digital Education Practitioners Discover how MSc Digital Education programme participants from Uganda are transforming their institutions with innovative digital practices. Ugandan alumna reflects on year in Edinburgh Tracy undertook a Master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar at the University of Edinburgh, and “hoped to learn how to strengthen [her] commitment to leadership and service.” As the founder of the non-profit ATTA Breastmilk Community, Tracy completed her degree and was able to simultaneously implement her learnings into the organisation. Women in research and academia Sharon Boateng, Program Manager of the Edinburgh Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, hosts an impactful online panel titled "Women in Research and Academia." Teaching Award for Scholars' Program Coordinator Inga Ackermann Inga Ackermann from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars’ Program team was acknowledged for her ‘Outstanding Contribution to Social Justice and Sustainability’ at the Edinburgh University Students' Association’s annual Teaching Awards in April 2024. 2024 Mastercard Foundation Scholars Council in-person meeting In late January 2024, Mastercard Foundation Scholars from all Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program partnering institutions gathered in Kigali, Rwanda, for the much-anticipated annual in-person meeting. A celebration of cultural diversity of online distance learners Access Culture is a programme developed to celebrate the diversity among African students in the online Mastercard Foundation Programme.
