A highly-esteemed institution with a long history, Doshisha University was founded as Doshisha Eigakko in 1875 by Joseph Hardy Neesima, reported to be the first Japanese citizen to have obtained an academic degree at a higher education institution in the United States. Doshisha University's Imadegawa Campus is located in the heart of Kyoto City, north of the Kyoto Imperial Palace and near Shokoku-ji Temple. Imadegawa Campus is itself a historic landmark of over 147 years and includes 5 important cultural properties and 2 registered tangible cultural properties, designations given by the Japanese government. Doshisha University has 14 Faculties, 16 Graduate Schools, the Institution for the Liberal Arts, and the Center for Global Education and Japanese Studies. It currently serves nearly 29,000 students.
