Universidad de las Américas Puebla

Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) is one of the most prestigious private universities in Mexico with an outstanding international reputation and tradition. As a space in which different cultural contexts merge, UDLAP provides students with a rich framework for freethinking and the superb resources so that they can successfully develop their professional aptitudes in their area of interest.

  • Students must have the equivalent of at least two years of college level Spanish or a B2 level in the Common European Framework of Languages to be eligible for this exchange.
  • Students who are not studying Spanish language nor who are native speakers will need to sit a language test around March if successfully awarded a place. Failure to pass the test with a B2 will result in you not being able to proceed with the exchange.
  • For most courses the language of instruction will be Spanish.
  • Students wishing to take Anthropology will need to seek permission for this exchange in advance.

Available exchanges

UDLAP hosts the University-wide exchange.

Restricted subject areas

Most courses are available to international students as long as they meet prerequisites and language requirements; however, there may be limited spaces in some courses.

It is important to note that this institution does not have a history department, and the History Exchange Coordinator has advised that this institution may not be suitable for those who have history in their degree programmes title. Students studying Anthropology will also need to seek permission in advance.

UDLAP has been identified by the School of Economics as a possible suitable institution.

Your responsibilities

  • The information provided here serves as a guide.
  • It is your responsibility to research whether the partner provides appropriate courses for your degree programme.
  • Even if there are no restrictions on your degree subject, this does not mean that there are appropriate courses for you.

Most courses are available to exchange students if the prerequisites are met and they have a proven B2 level of Spanish proficiency.

Guaranteed accommodation?

Maybe

University accommodation

UDLAP offers residential college and dormitory housing. Many students particularly enjoy staying in residential colleges and find them to be a convenient option, though they are subject to availability.

Private accommodation

Private accommodation arrangements must be made individually by the student. Keep in mind that UDLAP is a campus university, and therefore you would need to travel to campus.

If you prefer to live off-campus, finding an apartment or house is your responsibility. The on-campus information centre known as M.A.R.I in the “Centro Social” publishes listings of available apartments, the apartment address, costs and telephone numbers to contact the landlord. You will also find many signs in the streets renting apartments. Signing a lease in Cholula is still not a common practice.

The International Office at UDLAP does not provide information on apartment availability. The best way to find an apartment is to arrive a few days prior to the first day of the Orientation Week program. You will have to make reservations in a hotel until you find roommates and an apartment.

Visa and immigration requirements

Students staying for 180 days or longer will need a Student Temporary Resident Visa. More information can be found through UDLAP's online resources for exchange students.

How much it will cost to go on exchange to UDLAP?

Living in Mexico, particularly Puebla, can be quite affordable depending on lifestyle.

  • Accommodation: On-campus housing ranges from MX$28,740 to MX$43,050 per semester, depending on room selection and amenities.
  • Food: Monthly food expenses are approximately MX$7,000 to MX$9,000.
  • Local Transportation: Public bus fare is around MX$10, while UDLAP bus fare is MX$12. Taxi, Uber, and DiDi services are also available at affordable rates.

Health insurance

All International Students at UDLAP, without exception, are required to have international health and medical insurance coverage for the entire period of stay in Mexico, and that must include:

  • International emergency and sanitary evacuation.
  • Repatriation of remains in case of death.

Once purchased, students will be required to provide UDLAP with the following prior to arrival:

  • A copy of the policy, including name, date of birth, policy number, emergency phone number of the insurance company, coverage dates and at least 4 hospitals at Puebla where the insurance is accepted.

IMPORTANT: Students will not be able to officially enrol in courses if proof of medical insurance has not been provided.
