The first University of Perpignan was established in 1349 by King Peter IV of Aragon. Today it is a small research university with nearly 10,000 students and four faculties. The city of Perpignan has 120,000 residents is located in southern France, close to the border with Spain, and was historically part of the Principality of Catalonia. Both French and Catalan are spoken by locals and it is a designated Capital of Catalan Culture, making it a unique cultural setting for the year abroad.
