Course availability and course catalogues Exchange students are considered “non-degree” students at the University of Auckland and are enrolled in the COPEX (Certificate of Proficiency for Exchange) programme. Please review the course catalogue for a better idea about the courses available at the University of Auckland. The syllabi for courses offered will also be helpful when assessing your course options. Students can select courses across different disciplines, provided they meet prerequisites and the courses are not restricted. The standard course load for full-time study is 50-60 'points' per semester, totalling 100-120 'points' per year. Most courses are weighted 15 points, and students generally take four courses per semester. A standard semester course of 15 points represents 150 hours of study over 15 weeks: 12 teaching weeks, 3 study-break weeks and examinations. The student workload during the teaching weeks is made up of lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory classes, and other face-to-face contact, plus independent study as appropriate for each course. Currently, University accommodation is guaranteed to all incoming exchange students, as long as you submit an accommodation application by the priority consideration deadline. Please note this means you may need to apply before you are admitted to the programme. Please consider the implications of this, especially if you are expected to incur costs. Applications will still be considered after the priority deadline; however, placements cannot be guaranteed. University Accommodation The University of Auckland offers a range of accommodation options for exchange students to suit your preferences and budget. University accommodation is a great way to immerse yourself in campus life as you adjust to a new environment. From single rooms in shared apartments to private studios, Auckland's self-catered and catered residences offer students the opportunity to live within a thriving campus community. Exchange students who want to apply for University accommodation must do so online. Students are most often placed in a single room within self-catered and mix-gender accommodation unless they request special arrangements. University housing fees can vary from NZ$5,263 to $6,153 per semester. These fees include water, electricity, Wi-Fi and University Recreation Centre membership. Health insuranceAll international students are required to have appropriate health and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. The University of Auckland has selected the Studentsafe University policy as its preferred policy. The insurance fee must be paid by both Study Abroad and Exchange students, unless you are granted an insurance waiver for an alternative policy. The 2024 insurance fee is NZ$405 per semester.
