The University of Richmond is a private, predominantly undergraduate university located in Richmond, Virginia, spread over 350 acres in a beautiful suburban setting. The campus is only six miles from vibrant downtown Richmond, the capital of Virginia, and is two hours from Washington, D.C., the Blue Ridge Mountains and Virginia's beaches. The university is home to approximately 2900 undergraduate students, 700 graduate and law students and 318 full time faculty members. Ninety-eight percent of faculty members hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. Twelve percent of all undergraduate students are international and more than sixty percent of University of Richmond students’ study abroad before they graduate. There are 180 student clubs and organizations and over two-thirds of University of Richmond students participate in volunteerism or community service each year.

Courses with restrictions or prerequisites will require the permission of the instructor.   

Students are restricted from registering for School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) academic courses by several provisions (contact the University of Richmond for additional information).   

Law is a JD program so any incoming students must be approved by the University of Richmond Law School. A maximum of 5 law exchange students may be accepted per semester.   

Not suitable for Engineering. 

Richmond is listed by the School of Economics as a possible institution to consider.

University of Richmond offers a large number of subjects for students to study, including the Humanities, Math, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Sciences, Leadership Studies, and Law, among others. 

To make the most of your exchange, University of Richmond strongly encourages you to take at least one course on U.S. history, politics, literature, or culture.

The University of Richmond offers undergraduate courses at levels 100 -400. Not all courses are offered every semester and the level of difficulty of any given course is determined by each individual academic department. For example, some departments consider upper-level courses at the 200 level while other departments have 300 level classes available for freshman and sophomores. Students should check the online course description using the link above as well as any required pre-requisite course(s) listed.

Exchange students who meet all stated deadlines are guaranteed on-campus housing. Approximately 92% of undergraduates live on campus. 

Exchange students are not permitted to live off-campus. 

Furnished short-term off-campus housing is difficult to find and public transportation is limited. 

There are two kinds of housing available to undergraduate exchange students: 

1. Residence Halls 

2. University Apartments 

Due to the timing of the exchange applications, students are not able to request a specific type of housing and will be assigned based on roommate compatibility.

Immigration/Visa requirements  

In order to get a visa, you will need to prove you can access the average cost of living at Richmond. This is calculated based on how much average costs for accommodation, meals, health insurance etc. will cost. This includes proving access to funds through personal funds, or family or sponsorship funds. The amount to show is around $22,000 in total. This can be across multiple sources. You will need to provide sponsorship letters from personal funds/family members/sponsor funds/Sponsor organisations etc. 

Please bear this in mind. If you cannot prove this, you will not be able to get a visa and therefore not be able to go on exchange.  

How much it will cost to go on exchange to Richmond? 

On-campus housing: ~$7,000 to $8,500   

Meals: $3,330 for a limited plan or $8,000 for an unlimited plan   

Health Insurance: $2,610   

Books and supplies: $1,100   

Personal expenses: $1,130   

Flights: Varies, ~$1,500   

Spider Unlimited: Unlimited meals/week with 875 dining dollars/semester is the most common meal plan for undergraduates living on campus. This is also the smallest meal plan a student can purchase if they are assigned to a dorm room. If a student is assigned to an apartment on campus, they can choose a smaller meal plan or no meal plan at all.  

Health insurance 

Approximately $1,700 per semester and is mandatory.

All exchange students (regardless of immigration status) are required to attend a mandatory on-campus international orientation program. Law exchange students may need to arrive earlier for the Law School’s orientation program prior to international orientation. There is no cost for the orientation programs.
