Research

Education Beyond Borders (EBB) has established a research community with an ongoing research agenda focused on forced migration, refugee education and refugee mental health, and their intersection with higher education. This community is made up of staff from across the University whose research interests align with this agenda.

About our research

This research aims to build upon and expand the University of Edinburgh’s existing research expertise in refugee education by:

  • continuing to map the current research on refugee education being conducted at the University and look at opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaborations
  • funding relevant research projects in this field
  • using this research to identify relevant themes and activities for EBB programmes
  • carrying out these themes and activities through continuous, responsive and ongoing research initiatives designed to improve refugee education and inclusion across HE in general
  • disseminating the outcomes of our research projects both internally and across the sector
  • using research outcomes to influence policy and practice within the university and beyond.

Insights from this research will help shape the design and implementation of EBB activities. Research project reports and external publications will be posted on this page when they become available.

Research projects

We are funding a number of research projects throughout 2025 and 2026. Our current projects include:

  • Higher Education Access Programmes and Connected Education for Students with Refugee Backgrounds: A Global South Delphi Study
  • Bridging the Gap: Culturally Sensitive Mental Health Support for the Afghan Community in Edinburgh
  • Education Beyond Borders. Parents as Partners: Perspectives of refugee experienced families and educators
  • Refugee Education Listening Lab
  • Exploring the structural, legal, and practical barriers that limit access to employment displaced people in Scotland.
